Though they are an added attraction to the Marine, they hold a scientific logic. Tetrapods were imported to India from Australia in 1958. However, France developed it first in 1950. There are approx 6500 tetrapods at the Marine Beach. Each tetrapod weighs around 2 tons and costs more than Rs 5000 per tetrapod. We all know that gigantic waves hit the sea shore. These tetrapods are placed in an interlocking position. They act as a boundary which doesn’t let water go beyond a certain limit.
So when waves of high energy hit these rocks, some part of their energy is absorbed by tetrapods. They are often criticized for interrupting the natural process of soil erosion and nutrition. Though other options are being considered to protect the Marine drive by high energy waves, these tetrapods are quite popular in Japan. So the next time you visit Marine Drive, don’t forget to notice these unique tetrapods. Go, share this innovative piece of information with your friends too.
