Bhiwandi is located in Thane district. This city was earlier known as Kolwan. It is having a long history and during 18th Century Koli People used to live here. Though it is 20 K.M. away from Mumbai, but has every amenity which Mumbai posses. It is one of the most crowded localities of Mumbai-Thane. It is also one the most developing cities of India.

1 The tribal people of the region of Kolwan were called Kolis and they are traditional fishermen. Some of the traditional wooden fishing boats can be seen even today in the Bhiwandi area. The Kolis have their own customs and speak a different dialect of Marathi.


2 In the early Twentieth century, Bhiwandi was a small town, inhabited mainly by maharashtrians. Main occupation of the people during that time was agriculture, fishing and handloom.

3 With the introduction of electricity, the handlooms were replaced by power looms. The city of Bhiwandi, now known for its textile industry. It has the largest number of Power looms in the country and is dubbed as ‘The Manchester of India’. Bhiwandi has about 9 lakh of the country’s 21 lakh powerloom machines.

4 The first textile loom was set-up by Khan Saheb Samad Seth in 1927. Today the city of Bhiwandi has about half a million-power looms, though handlooms are few in number. No wonder Bhiwandi is Manchester of India.

5 It comes under the administration of the Bhiwandi-Nizampur City Municipal Corporation. The city is part of the Greater Mumbai metropolitan agglomeration. According to the 2011 census, the total population of the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation area was 709,665

6 A major portion of the population is employed by the Power loom sector only. Bhiwandi has been developing as an Industrial hub for the textile industry in the past, and all industries and logistics sector in recent times.
